Active participation in mental health treatment as prescribed by a doctor, psychologist or psychiatrist is an important factor in helping the individual to live a normal lifestyle. There are numerous types of treatments and services which can help people who suffer from mental illness. The types of treatments or behavioral services that are ideal for you will depend on the mental illness being treated.

Medications

Many mental illnesses can be treated with medications but not all patients will respond well to medication based treatment. Some medications have been found to significantly improve the well-being of those who suffer from certain mental illnesses while others are only occasionally prescribed. Your doctor or treatment professional may prescribe any of the following types of medications for the treatment of various mental illness related symptoms:

  • Adderall
  • Lorezapam
  • Buspirone
  • Klonopin
  • Lithium
  • Paxil
  • Prozac
  • Ritalin
  • Xanax
  • Zoloft
  • Wellbutrin
  • Seroquel

Psychosocial Treatment

For support, education and guidance, various types of psychosocial treatment may be provided by a behavioral services provider to assist the individual suffering from the mental illness, the family members and the friends of the individual suffering from a particular mental illness. Some of the most common psychosocial treatments that may be provided to those suffering from mental illness include:

  • support groups
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • dual diagnosis treatment
  • psychotherapy
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Assertive Community Treatment (ACT)

These methods of treatment for mental illness are sometimes called talk therapy, social training or vocational training depending on the type of treatment being provided as well as who is receiving the support or the educational services. Psychosocial treatment for mental illness can reduce the consequential impact of the mental illness and improve overall functioning for the individual.

Other Services

In addition to providing psychosocial therapy and medications to help those who suffer from mental illness, the treatment may also include various other support services to ensure the best chance for optimal recovery. A case manager will provide support and care for the individual while he or she is receiving treatment for mental illness. The case manager acts as the liaison for the individual helping to coordinate care, support, educational involvement and other methods of treatment necessary as outlined in the patient treatment plan.

If hospitalization is necessary, the individual will enter a psychiatric hospital where he or she will be treated around-the-clock for the mental illness in an environment where they pose no risk to themselves or to others. Hospitalization is typically a last resort scenario but a necessary option for some who suffer from extreme cases of mental illness which require more than just medications and psychosocial therapy. This method of treatment provides a safe setting where the patient can receive intensive treatment and therapy.
